ACER PALMATUM (JAPANESE MAPLES)
DWARF MAPLES: These maples are ideal for small gardens and rockery (rock gardens). Many can be used for bonsia and containers for the patio. Versitile to say the least but very small in every way. Many colors make up the dwarf group. There are some beautiful spring colors in Akaji nishika and Veno homare. There are nice reds for smaller yards such as Shaina and Ruby Ridge. Others have very interesting leaf structure (Okoshimu, Mikawa yatsabusa). Dwarfs give a lot for their size and are a good choice if the yard is small.

Akaji nishika (Bonfire): This maple has a bright orange
leaf in the spring. The orange will change to a green in the
summer months. Very compact growing up to 6ft.

Beni hoshi: This maple has bright red foliage in the spring becoming a red green in the summer. Becomes a very compact dwarf upright tree. Will grow up to 5ft after many years. The name means "red star" because of the leaf shape.

Goshiki kotohime: This maple has very small pink-red leaves with green viens. There is verigation of tiny flecks and speckles covering the leaf. As the leaf matures it becomes green and contrast with the new foliage. Grows up to 3ft. The name means, "dwarf multicolored old harp".

Mikawa yatsubusa: This maple has green foliage that is heavily layered. As if the leaves are stacked on top of one another. Grows very tight like Beni hoshi but tends to spread out slightly as it grows up. The outer leaves have red tinting around the margins. Will reach 8ft. The name means "a small cluster of three rivers".

Kandy Kitchen: The spring growth of this maple is a pink-red. The new growth contrast with the mature leaves which are a purple red. The fall color is a scarlet red. Forms a compact shrub up to 6.5ft.

Kiyohime yatsubusa: This maple has green leafts tinged with orange-red. The fall color is a yellow-orange. With form a roundish bush up to 6.5ft. The name means "yellow-leaved dwarf".

Shaina: The small leaves of this dwarf are a bright red in the spring and becoming purple red in the summer. There are not many red dwarfs out there. This one is among the best. A very tight grower forms a round dense tree up to 10ft.
