ACER PALMATUM (JAPANESE MAPLES)
GREEN UPRIGHT MAPLE: Like the reds the green uprights make for a good centerpiece of focus plants in any size yard. For larger yards a mix of greens and reds together make for year round appeal. Among the greens each has its own season to shine. Some have brilliant spring colors of orange and pinks (Katsura, Shin deshojo), others have brilliant fall colors or bright orange-reds to purple (Osakazuki, Seiru, Acontifolium), and others show colorful bark in the winter (Sango kaku, Beni kawa). For color and leaf variation the greens have it.

Arakawa: This maple has unique corky or rough textured bark. This develops as the tree ages. The leaves are a lime green. Grows vigorously up to 26ft. The name means, "rough bark".

Acontifolium (Fernleaf maple)(japonicum): This maple has large leaves and forms a round tree. Has very strong vigor when young. The fall color is a deep maroon and almost purple color. Will grow up to 15ft.

Aureum (Golden Fullmoon maple): This maple has a bright yellow color in the spring. Aureum retains its color in the shade and does not burn readily in the sun. The fall color is another feature with varying colors of orange, red, and purple. The bright red fruit (seeds) also add to this nice tree. Will grow up to 20ft at maturity.

Beni kawa: This maple is similar is most every way to Coral Bark maple or Sango kaku. Beni kawa also leafs out later which gives it protection in the spring from a late frost. A good alternative to Sango kaku when planting in a smaller yard as Beni kawa is more compact and only reaches up to 10ft where the Coral Bark will reach up to 24ft.

Katsura: The spring color of this maple is a pale yellow-orange with dark orange margins. The summer colors are light green. In the fall the color is bright yellow and orange. This maple forms a dense upright tree up to 16ft. The name means, "wig".

Sango kaku (Coral bark maple): A favorite for many because of the intense red colored bark in the winter. The lime green leaves are small and contrast with the bark, especially as fall aproaches and the leaf color becomes a yellow. This tree gradually spreads at the top and may reach 26ft. Shin deshojo: The spring foliage is among the most brilliant of all maples. The color is a flaming scarlet or crimson scarlet.
